the story behind

The Lake Loon Designs

When I think of loons, I think back to a summer my family spent in Thunder Bay, Ontario when I was about 9 years old. We stayed in a cottage on a beautiful lake, and I will always remember the sounds of the loons.

Every evening at sunset, they would call to each other across the water. It's a hauntingly beautiful sound... a combination of call and warble that's truly unique and very memorable.

A couple of years ago, a friend and regular customer of mine Barb asked if I could design a specifically Canadian pillow she could take with her as a gift on a trip to Australia.

She said maybe maple trees? or maybe loons?

Hmmmmm.

I thought back to some photos another friend of mine Karen had shown me from a vacation she'd taken just that past August. Beautiful, misty photos from a lake she'd stayed at near North Bay, Ontario. They reminded me of that summer on the lake when I was a kid.

BING!!!

That's all it took to inspire me.

Without hesitation, I got right to work in my studio.

Karen generously offered her pictures as source material, I added the loons, and that's how my Lake Loon designs came together.

The Loon on the Water design (in the chair here) was first, and later I added the Lake Loon design (in front of the chair).

Thank You to both Barb and Karen for the inspiration!
